...and one reformed poet,
Elizabeth Mary Bertoldi
Working poets I admire ...
This started out to be about individual poets, but as I
searched through the poetry of some I’d been admiring
I came to realize that it wasn’t the whole body of their
work that impressed me so much as the poems selected
by the editorial staff of “Poetry” that move me.
“The most beautiful music of all is
the music of what happens.” Irish proverb
Valzhyna Mort’s latest book, Factory of Tears, is a brilliant,
moving work of extraordinary art.  Her images are stunning,
evolving in complex and unexpected ways.  She writes mostly
in Belarus, later translating into English; however, it is difficult
to imagine that the poems could be more powerful in any
language other than English.  Mort currently lives in the United
States.  Check her out at http://vimeo.com/6908506.
Atsuro Riley’s first collection, Romey’s Order, came out in 2010
and has received significant complimentary critical commentary.
His poems, “Clary” and “Hutch”, first published in “Poetry”
are brilliant examples of what contemporary poetry can and
should be.  They are lyrical without succumbing to lyricism’s
pitfalls.  They tell a story, without descending to the prosaic.
They are rhythmic  and musical, but cannot be fully appreciated
without reference to their sophisticated presentation on the
page.  One hopes that Atsuro Riley will write and write more.
